Backup Exec 11d 7170 - Mismatched Serial Numbers

Backup Exec cannot use this tape device because it has detected a mismatched tape device serial number. The device status has been changed to offline. Please restart all Backup Exec services to fix this problem.

I have reinstalled the drivers for our IBM Ultrium drives (LTO1), Reinstalled backup exec, deleted the drives from backup exec and device manager, let 2003 pick them backup on reboot, updated the firmware per Quantum (ADIC)... has anyone else ever experienced this error? Veritas support didn't have much to add either.
