Backup Exec won't back up a server

By eswoodland ·
I'm running an NT 4.0 SP6a server and a Terminal 4.0 SP6a server and using Backup Exec 7.3, that's loaded on the NT4 server. My backup keeps giving me this error: "Unable to attach to \\TERMINAL\C$, Access is denied" I've changed passwords on the Backup Exec services, stopped and restarted them and even changed the password for the "backup" account that I'm using for the services in User Man. I even stopped and restarted the default share on the Terminal server. None of this has helped! Any suggestions?

I assume that you're using the Enterprise Ed. without which you cannot backup other servers, only the local one. You didn't mention if the backup worked before or not. But, I find BacExec to be the best backup product in the market. I use ArcserveIT now, and beleive me, it's not fun. I used BacExec for years and never had any problems. If you didn't do it yet, try to recreate the job from the GUI interface and run it again. Also, I'm curious as to know if the same settings work in other servers.

Good luck!

Does the backup service have the appropriate permissions on the Terminal server?

Is the Backup Exec services a member of a group that has permissions on the Terminal server, to the drive and the share? If 'no' you need to make sure it is. If 'yes' then is the Backup Exec services a member of a group that is denied access to the drive, share or the Terminal server itself? If 'yes' remove it from that group. If 'no' I'm not sure where to go from here.

Good luck.

Verify the user: The user you're using for the backup services, log in as that user and ensure that you can manually logon AND access all drives.

Ensure that the Backup Exec service user has 'logon as service' and even logon locally if needed rights.

Along with what has already been metioned; update your version to the latest build. I have found a lot of these bugs cleared up with the newest builds. Also, if worst comes to worst--do a reinstall then go into the registry and **** away all keys pertaining to Backup Exec. This will give you a fresh install and may clear up the problem.
