Backup Software

By mc33 ·
I need to backup a single Netware 6 Small Business Edition server. The built in backup software is not that great (and after several hours of support with Novell, doesn't really work for me). This is basically an unmanaged server so I'm looking for something fairly simple that I can teach the office staff. Does anyone have any experience with backup software that may meet my needs? Thanks

I've always liked BackupExec, but the version 9.x doesn't seem to be quite as straight-forward. If you can find 8.5 or maybe even 8.0 somewhere that might be worth a shot. The job history gives a one-word status indicator for all jobs. So if a job says 'Normal', your gold. Anything else would require looking into. Can easily be managed at the server console or from a workstation if you install the management client. If you find it still available, you can always download a copy first on a 30 day trial from www.veritas.com to make sure you like it, then just add the license if you decide to buy.

That is a tough one.
For the most part ,they all have their bugs.BE 9.0 is the only version that support 6.x and it has some real issues ,same with CA Brightstor.
I have heard good things about Tapeware, but haven't used it.
Between virus scans and tape backup software ,I don't know which is worse in terms of reliability.

Good luck...

You didn't mention service paclk level for your 6.0??
What do you mean about office staff? I can't even teach our office staff to find a directory if it isn't mapped.
What kind of data will be backed up? Is it critical or are you just backing up SYS and nds?
How many users? teh answer to some of these will determine how elaborate you must be in your backup. In any case a backup of DATA is critical, and can be done disk to disk if you wnat to reinstall NetWare when or if it crashes. i use "Replicator" from karen Kenworthy as a additional disk to disk backup.

The previous comment is correct, you must have 9.0 or higher when using BE. I am using 9.1 and find it a delight, but it probably isn't for faint of heart and should be purchased with the maintenace package for startup in case there are glitches.

If I were starting out from scratch I might consider syncsort at:

Do you have a support company or are you it? If you use someone for suppooirt find out what they know how to use and go with that. good Luck.
