By Bhrdwh ·
How do I backup SQL 7.0 & Oracle 8i Databases running on different NT Servers on a different server having external tape as backup device on NT running Backup Exec 6.11 Rev 204 ? Is there a way I can take backup of running (live) databases ?

Nice to see you're turning to the NetWare guys to solve your NT problems ;-)
Anyway, there are two ways to backup databases on any server:
-Stop the service and close the files prior to a backup (via AT or a pre- and post-backup-task), but then your backup is of the set of files, not of the individual items in it (like individual mail-items in a mailserver)
-Use an agent. For most major database types there is an agent available, that needs to be running on the "target" machine. Your backup-software talks, locally or via the LAN, with that agent, and the agent takes care of properly taking the data and transferring it to the backup-software. Check http://www.veritas.com/us/products/backupexec/beoptionsnt2000.html for info on agents.
The only thing I'm not too sure of is the BackupExec version you're talking about. It may be so that, in order to use those agents, you'll have to upgrade your BackupExec.
