I have a backup tape stuck in the server tape drive. The eject button will not work. I CANNOT down this server under any circumstances…

How do I get the tape out?

There is no way. The tape itself has unspooled from the cartridge, and has jammed the drive.

There has to be a way to down the server, surely the company you works for allows for server maintenance.

You need to impress on the decision makersthat a malfunctioning tape drive NOT BACKING up a file server is doing anyone absolutely no good, and the 10 minutes to remove it, and 10 minutes to re-install after it has been repaired is a much greater value than recreating ( Years? ) of data if the file server decides to crash.

Well, the backup jobs are still running at their scheduled times…

I agree with #2. The tape has unspooled.

If you think the backup jobs are running normally, you’re probably listening to even more tape dumping out, making for a bigger mess.

If I were you, and “they” won’t let me drop this server for any reason (so, how to you restore?), I’d pack my bag and let them discover I no longer work there when the dust on my desk piles up!

If this is such a mission critical machine, it should have hot swappable tape drives. If this is the case, just pop the old out, put a new in and you’re done. If not, I guess someone should have thought of that at inception.
