Backup tapes cannot be read

By jasonschambers ·
1.I am running veritas backup exec with a HP DLT tape drive. I am running the backups on a Windows 2000 member server

2. I am running the backups on a Windows 2000 member server.

Problem: I have my overwrite level set to overwrite the tape, but I put the tape in and it errors out saying to insert overwritable media. I have tried to format the tape but the option is greyed out in the menu.

How can I make these tapes readable again?
How do I format a tape when the option is greyed out?P.S.
Some tapes work and these tapes are only about 6 months old. I have cleaned the tape drive, but it does work still.
Am I setting my overwrite protection level wrong when I set it to overwrite all of it, and why would it read a tape one week and not the other.
Thanks in advance!

create a custom mmc and add the Removable Storage Snapin....you should be able to manage the media from there....

go to start/run...and type mmc ...add the snapin from there...

hope this helps.

you have to check the ms site regarding a list of tape that can be used to back up make sure yours is on the list otherwise you will have to get one from the list they mention. i don't happen to have the list right now but sure you can find on it.
