Backup to DVD

By optronix_quebec ·

Another question for you guys.

I've been using Nero BackItUp in a Windows Server 2003 environment to save documents and data folders to DVD on a daily basis. Plus on the fridays I also back up the exchange mailstore.

However, from an administrative standpoint, I'm not crazy about the software : it doesn't send me logs on failures and it seems to use DVD for no good reason as they do not appear fully burned on the back.

I'm sure you guys would be aware of nice backup solutions that could be fully automated, require no end-user intervention other than putting in the DVD, have nice compression algorithms, that would send me an e-mail on major failure and that can run at set times with the credentials I provide it.

PS : Only one server to be backed up so I'm not looking at a central backup management solution as workstations are set up to have all data saved on the server.

PSS : I'm not stuck on this but if there are nice open source solutions out there, all the better. I'd rather encourage a software community who have put time and effort in developping a robust product than Symantec or Microsoft.

PSSS : If the software can also do a full system backup in case of hardware failure that's a nice plus.

Data backup

Take a look at Universe point's Ion. Runs on ws2k3, nice scheduling features, provides good error feedback (can even be monitored by them for a monthly fee). Only disk-to-disk, no DVDs. Free trial, or you can get the full version free if you pay for the monthly monitoring:

good luck

Thanks for the reply. However, we really need DVD backup so disk-to-disk is not an option unfortunately.

I did however end up breaking down and getting an acronis true image server trial.

It's been working great so far so we'll most likely buy the full version.
