Backup to External Drive solution needed

Hey all,
I have given up trying to backup our data to offsite solutions because we have database files that are too large to transfer without good compression (and even compression doesn’t work right). So I’d like to buy a nice, shiny external drive and set it to backup specific folders from our application db server but to also backup mapped drives from other servers (i.e. share folders from different severs and map them to drives x: y: z: on application server). What’s a good drive with good software that I can purchase for efficient backups?

Using Windows 2003 btw.
