Backup Verify hardware requirements...

By dlanors ·
I would like to offer my clients a service which takes their backup tape, and does a simulated restore on a system in my lab. I would then provide a report on the viability of their backup, and its ability to actually do a restore of their O/S, userdatabase, and critical data.Since I have a varied client base which uses both Novell (from 3.12 to 5.1) and NT (4.0 and 2000), I am trying to determine my minimum equipment to be able to accomodate any client. Obviously, I need all the necessary formats of tape drives, but I am trying to determine if I would actually need the exact server model, NIC's etc. loaded in order to come up with a meaningful restore. Any opinions would be appreciated.

NT employs HAL so you will need the exact same server, nics etc. Novell does the same even worse. The best alternative would be to sell them on the idea of a raid. In fact that is the only "safe" solution because tape machines have a nasty habit of eating the stupid tape. Try to sell them on a hot swap mirror. This is more realistic. You did say any opinion.

I appreciate the answer, that is basically what I already thought, I am looking for a little more info..ie., if I don't have the exact server/nic config, will I get a restore that will at least let me know that the data is OK, and the user base is intact. Since I don't need to actually put this restore into production, I can live with a few driver errors, etc.I am wondering if, with those errors, especially with Novell, will I be able to get to a point to verify the O/S and user data.

No, you do not need to duplicate the server configuration. All you need to duplicate is the backup software and the tape drive. You should take note of the the tape cartridge type and its format, plus the OS of the server. You can just redirect restores on your local drive to verify validity of data that has been backed up on tape. Usually, NT backup software could read Novell servers, so there should not be any problem restoring from an NT machine to the local hard disk. I would suggest getting a SCSI-3 hard disk and at least a 128MB of RAM.
