Backup - Windows XP Professional

By geordiemike17 ·
Hi everybody.....
Um, any ideas as to why "Backup" can't see my CD writer ? It just tells me that "the backup filename could not be used" when selecting my "E" drive and to make sure I have the correct privileges.
I'm using an 'administrator'logon, can talk to the CD without problems using Nero etc, have read all the info about "Removable Storage" etc and I'm still lost.......
FWIW, I'm a software-specialist of some 25 years (mainframe admittedly, so hit me with the dinosaur jokes)hence if I'm struggling, how's the average 'dumb user' doing ?
I'm more than willing to admit that I'm doing something stupid (which I just can't see) but it seems to me that Microsoft have managed to take such a simple concept as data-backup and turned it into a minefield......
And um, it goes without saying that I've already searched their 'knowledge' database.....
Best regards and many thanks......
Mike Casey

Hi, Mike
From one "dinosaur" to another, don't feel bad...
As you've discovered, Windows XP "Backup" (Ntbackup.exe) doesn't support writing to CD devices. My guess is that the utility came from "NT" which has been around since before the CD burners were so common (and inexpensive!). One way to accomplish this (without any added software) is to backup to a file and then copy the file to the CD writer. Of course, you need to make sure that the backup is broken into sets of (MAX) 650 MB. HTH, good luck,
---Will
