Locked

Bad Install?

By steve.doig ·
Hi,

I previously had Win98 installed, giving me a lot of headaches with bluescreens. All of my browsers crashed before I was finished with them, most other programs would crash, and the system would lock at indiscriminate times.

I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Win98, getting much the same problems. I used various registry scans and virus scans with no errors. The amount of time dealing with blue screens and program failures was roughly equal to proper usage time.

I again formatted the drive and installed Windows ME. It performs considerably better, with internet programs lasting longer. However,
using programs like browsers, email, or windows explorer generated errors about 40% of the time. The errors were usually in
MSHTML.DLL
MSHTMLED.DLL
KRNL386.EXE
CONTROL.DLL
USER.EXE.
What vexed me was Windows Explorer failing half the time, citing errors in MSHTML.DLL.

Any ideas of what I'm up against?
Should I try Win2000?
What are some things to look at or try?
Should I format ALL partitions on a drive, not just the primary?

Help or advice much appreciated.

If possible go to the internet and go to www.search.com and search for .dll files and try to replace or update them by downloading all the .dll files that are having problems.

Hi, I too had errors and blue screens as described on 2 computers one running Win 98 SE and one running Win 98 me. I loaded Win2000 Pro on both of them and so far no errors or blue screens. But, before you make the switch from Win98 to Win 2000 be advised a search for drivers is probably in order. Sound cards and video boards for sure. Most of the drivers for 2000 can be found on maunfacture's web site or try http://www.driversguide.com
BTW, all software that was being used on my two computersruns just fine on the 2000 pro install. Good luck.

Hi, Steve,

It is not normally Win'98 or Win'ME(when it and the hardware are well-tuned)to have such behaviour, and the causes are most likely in the driver or hardware complectation.
It is necessary to describe the system and the drivers you use. Sometimes such problems are solved by changing a card or software not evidently connected to the problem.
