‘Bad Password’ error on file share

    Locked

    by drush1515 ·

One of my W2K servers is no longer allowing
users to connect to shares. No matter what
user or password I try to connect with, I get a
bad password error. I’ve tried resetting the
passwords, resetting the share, restarting the
server (froma cold and warm boot).

When I view the server from the ‘network
neighborhood’ no shares are visible even
though they are set on the machine.

When I try to map a network drive, the only
choice I get is IPC, and no password works for
    that.

I was able to give my users ‘guest’ access to
the main share that I’m concerned about so
    they can still connect.

It seems like there is a corrupted service or
something, but I’m not sure what to look for or
how to fix it. I thought shutting the machine
down and restarting would fix it but no luck…

    Another server is the PDC…
My users connect from Macs to mount the
    share.
I’ve patched the server (after the problem
    started)…
    Thanks for any insight….

Just a guess here. I think your W2K server lost its membership with the domain. Try removing from domain then rejoining the domain.

Tried this and got the same errors. I can log into the server
using Active Directory accounts, so the server is seeing
the domain controller. The file shares are where I’m
having trouble. I even tried to create a local user, but that
would not let me connect to the share either…

Verify that the three required services are running.
      Workstation
      Server
      Computer browser

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and they were all
running the way the seemed to need to be. I also checked
the necessary services for each piece and everything was
there… I appreciate the idea, however.

You mentioned that your users are trying to connect from Macs? Are you running some form of NFS software from your W2K server? If not how is it that you are trying to get the Macs ot communicate with windows? Macs user the UNIX standard NFS file sharing protocol, while windows uses CIFS. My guess is that you were running some form of NFS server software on your W2k server. Check to make sure the service for this software is still running.

Can you see your shares from other windows computers?

I ended up reinstalling W2K. Luckily I partitioned the OS on
the C: drive and was able wipe itwhile salvaging the D:
        drive data….
