Bandwidth Utilization monitoring of WAN

By robertbrittonjr ·
We have a public and private frame relay network using cisco 1600 and 2500 series routers.

we need to check:

1. bandwidth utilization
2. Capacity planning

in some kind of histogram format.

In other words, what software (freeware, shareware, commercialware) can i use
to give me a run down on my wan utilization.

for example, if one of my links is 384k private frame, how much of it is being utilized, by who, and are we getting 384k bandwidth.

we have a problem with our providerin that our routers are setup for 384k or N channels, but we don't think they are actually delivering what they are contractually obligated to.

I'm open to all methods, including snmp managers, wan sniffers, etc. but i do have a very limited budget.

thank you.

There are a couple of manufacturers (ADTRAN being one) that make devices that reside between your router/frad and your providers frame. Typically they are managed by a dedicated workstation that sits there and gathers data. There are some canned reports
available but the data can be exported comma-delimited format.

We have implemented a Linux box and SNMP capture from the servers and routers. We used a scrap p-100 for the Linux box and Red Hat for the Linux.

We found 1/3 of our WAN traffic was due to PrintServer Talking over the whole network.

I did not set it up but if you want email me and I will get the deatils.....we also used a NAI sniffer to verify the packets and what they were.....Good Luck....Chuck

All of your items can be monitored using NT's own performance monitor.
RUN Perfmon
Go to the log view
Add suitable counters with the big +
E.g. Processor, Memory, Network Segment (If not present install SNMP and Network Monitor tools and agent)Also record Process
Save the Log. Trap give it an extension .LOG e.g. Fri.log
Set the log running for an hour.
Stop Log
Tools Data From find .... find log file.
Switch to Chart view and click on the + and add the counter you are interested in e.g. Network Utilisation.
Then repeat with more / different objects for different times of the day.

Take a look at what Packeteer has to offer (http://www.packeteer.com/). Not only can their products report on bandwidth utilization, but you can actually prioritize the traffic by application or source address.

I have had a lot of sucess with a freeware product called MRTG. http://www.mrtg.org/

"The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing GIF images which provide aLIVE visual representation of this traffic."

It uses Perl & C on NT or Unix to monitor devices by SNMP. Other variables can also be monitored using custom scripts.

Well worth a look as it may do everything you want for no cost.
