Barcode Scanning in MS Access

By wsalamo ·
I have an Access database to check out low vision equipment and need to check items out with a barcode scanner. Can anyone give me some hints on how to do this.

... generally emulate keyboard input, so this generally isn't a problem.

There are wedge type scanners that plug inline into the keyboard PS/2 interface, serial, or USB scanners. Serial probably isn't used much any more, but I don't know since I haven't worked with these for awhile.

Basically, install the scanner and/or drivers, position into a text field, scan, and BLAM! the text value of the barcode appears in the text field.

Also, the scanner will come with codes or a utility so that you can configure the scanner with certain behaviour, like appending a tab character to tab to the next field automatically for example. Another example is to append a non-printable code to the scanned input so that you can tell if a user scanned or typed the value. Some places use this feature and put in an error checking routine which will dis-allow typed input and force a user to scan.
