By hersheyboy ·
I followed the techrepublic article and have tried 3 different memory sticks , but none will reboot my dell after hitting F12 and selecting USB as the boot device.

Well the most obvious thing

Is that your Dell doesn't support Booting off a USB Device so it doesn't load the USB Drivers at the CMOS Level and while you can chose to tell it to boot of the USB Sticks if it's unable to read the USB ports even if you have added the correct drivers to the USB Device the fact of the matter is that you'll be unable to boot of any USB Device as there is nothing loaded to support the USB Ports.

Info like this needs to be included in articles from techrepublic. I suspect Compaq and HP have similar issues.
