Batch copy of SAM/Security possible?

By tech_rep ·
I need to reproduce my user and group accounts on new Windows NT 4.0 server hardware for our workgroup. Is there a trick to copying/restoring the information to the new server? I hope someone has the answer, but I have a bad feeling that I'll be doing alot of data entry. Thanks.

make the new server a BDC in the domain and then promote it to a PDC, that way teh server will have a copy of your sam.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. We are not running in a domain, but are a workgroup, only. This system acts as a file/data server.

There may be a few ways that you may do this. there not garentied sence I've not tried it on a stand alown workstation, only domains.
One, Give administrators full access to the SAM in the reg. It will complain, but you can take control and export it and import it into a new system.
Two, Use the net user command in dos. Export the user list. Useing the user list, export the settings for ea user useing net user username >username.txt. Compile all the username.txt files into one large file, then use the file to create a large bat file to re-imput the users. If you have less than 25-30 users, it may be faster to re key them in. But if you have a lot, use the search and replace funct in word to replace carrage returns and tabs.
Hope this helps you.
