It really depends on the particular laptop - although ...

That is perhaps a bit over-simplistic.

Certainly, if your run a laptop on mains power for heavily extended periods of time, the general school of thought is that you'd be better doing so without the laptop battery fitted. I personally run a laptop without the battery attached and have done for over a year now (but I can't do any more damage since the battery is all but completely unusable now anyway).

However, having said that, there ARE a few models of laptop that WILL NOT RUN on mains power WITHOUT the battery attached.

If yours will run from mains power without the battery in-place, I would recommend that you remove it.

Also, if you are going to leave your laptop battery unattached for a lengthy period of time, don't forget that the charge will run down EVEN when it it not plugged in. So if you are going to need the battery for mobile work, don't forget that it will probably require an overnight charge to bring it back to life. Do not assume that it is still fully charged, because it won't be.

And batteries only last about 2 years, no matter what.

Sometimes less. Regardless as to how much they are used, or even if they are sitting on a shelf in a dark closet.
