BDC fails when PDC goes off-line

By alpenny ·
Why would a BDC fail to authenticate users after a PDC goes off-line. The PDC is sited remotely across a 64Kb leased line (which failed) and the databases synchronise correctly and frequently, according to the event logs.

BDC fails when PDC goes off-line

How certain are you that, in normal circumstances, it _is_ the BDC which does authentication? Officially the MS mechanisms lead a client to authenticate to the 'closest' DC but practice in our WAN is different, the DC machine might be 5 hops away while the closest one is almost idle!

To avoid this behaviour, we had to
- apply some NT patches (dunno which), helped only partly
- run the PREFPDC utility of the resource kit on some workstations. This sets a registry key on the ws which really makes it look first for the (B)DC which you want.

Hope this helps,
