BDC not always responding

By Central ·
Hopefully I am just missing the obvious. I have a PDC and BDC on my network (NT4). Everynight the PDC is rebooted and when that happens, the BDC seems to fail to authenticate logins. If I reboot the BDC, it will start authenticating users again. Not sure where the problem lies. Any ideas?

This may be obvious but is the BDC acting as a logon server? Had the BDC been promoted to PDC? Hope this helps

Check the throughput setting on the server is set as appropriate, check that the speed of the network card is set appropriately especially with that of the switch is plugged into. For example, 10/100 Mbit/sec and don’t forget to check if the network card is faulty (check you event viewer to ascertain why the server is not authenticating.

Are you actually getting failed authentication messages on the server (BDC)? Or are your workstations getting the "no logon server available" message? If it's on the workstation side, it could in fact be several things, but the most likely issue is name resolution. If your PDC is doing name resolution for your network (i.e., it is the only WINS or DNS server on the network), then that's probably the cause of the problem. Hope this helps!

The workstations are getting the error and the BDC is the WINS server.

Check to see that the netlogon service is running on the BDC when the users can not authenticate, during the time the PDC is shutdown. Try restarting it instead of rebooting.

Have there been any changes to any of the IT environment since it last worked, assuming it has a prove record of successfully operation in the past.
