Best and easiest network virus software?

    Locked

    by fred ·

    Hi,

we have an all-NT network, 1 server and 20 workstations. we use Network Associates virus software on both, but the updating of the software, virus patterns, and scan engines is not as automatic as i think it should be.

the question is:is there some good virus software out there that autoupdates itself easily, regularly, and reliably?

    thanks for your help!

I found with that software that the update for dats and such are on a network sever which is not mapped before the Mcafee service try’s to run.
Also be sure you put in a custom account to upgrade since NT will not let a non local admin update itself. When you install use an account that has local admin rights on all nt boxes.
      ie:
      user= mydomain\mcafee
      pass= eefacm
yes the user must be with the domain name prestent as stated.

We have gone to Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.x and it works great! Once you get it set up and pushed out to your clients you don’t have to mess with it at all. Your server will go out to Norton liveupdate when you specify (for us 3:30 AM) and retrieve any necessary updates, your other servers connect up to the server that just did the download at a specified time (4 AM) to get their updates and our workstations will check their parent server twice a day for any updates. Also any administrative changes you made to the configuration are pushed out to the workstations when they get their updates.

Although I am partial to Norton AV and currently use it, I must still manually update the master dat files from the internet, whereas Inoculan seems to do a better job at automating itself, with a bit of a pain…

      Hello, Fred
We using Antiviral Toolkit Pro by Kaspersky Lab(http://www.kasperskylab.ru/eng/news/default.asp), and we found it optimal for network use. More than 36000 known viruses, fast, frequently updates.

      With best regards,

I think Norton AntiVirus Enterprise Suite 4.0 is the way to go. Several studies and anecdotal user comparisons have found NAV to catch more viruses than McAfee/NA and it couldn’t be easier to deploy and maintain. Just push it out to the desktops, set up your update and scan schedules and you have the basics covered. Nothing more to do, but if you want to make changes or check reports, it is really easy.

If you buy it through one of Symantec’s Small Business Licensing partners, you should be able to get the media and licenses as a competitive updgrade for less than $900. Check it out:

May 9, 2000 PC Magazine http://www.pcmag.com addressed this & other issues in their periodic review of utilities … they compared various vendors products that claim to do the same thing … interestingly the vendors that got good marks in the comparison for stand-alone PC protection were not the same that got the best grades for network protection, which can complicate your life for those viruses that can arrive by e-mail to client then jump to network files … if you want the best protection for both client & server, you have to have different vendors AV.

The article ranked competing network AV for installation, configuration, management, updating, notification & logging, scanning & disinfection, overall – different AV got high marks in different categories … they also had pages of text going into details about what they were griping about.

The article also addressed the challenge of making sure that all connected clients have all relevant protections, for which there now are AV service provid

IBM Corporate has a secret. They have a box that knocks the socks off Java performance, can not get viruses, has never been hacked, can be the server for NT, Unix, Linux, and many other OS. IBM marketing is prohibited from promoting this box because there is more profit to be made by selling garbage … more IBM profit … and do they want to attract the Justice Dept anti-trust by selling something that is far superior to the competition?

I am referring to the AS/400. There are many siteswith info about it such as
      http://www.as400network.com
      http://www.midrange.com

I know that is not what you looking for … your company has already invested in garbage that most people have & you struggling to clean it up & I am saying that various studies have shown that the operating lifetime cost of AS/400 is way below NT & one of the reasons is that security is a piece of cake to manage by comparison.

The ability to push updates and other (non anti-virus related) software is why my first choice would be Norton Enterprise edition. Although occationally they do put out a buggy signature file (Sometimes the machines need a reboot or they blue screen). For a network your size I’d go with the most economical

My suggestion would be trend micro(pccillin for the desktops) I have used mcafee,norton,f-secure and trend.I have found trend to be more user freindly. Trend cleans better. Microsoft uses trend for all of their networks. http://www.antivirus.com I also find that trend uses less system resources, also does not require as many reboots. It comes with most motherboards as a oem,(they are usually older versions).

Good Virus Software: Nortons Anti-virus (NAV) as mentioned above by (PhinAddict, Tod.O and JSwanciger). You are reminded that your virus protection is only as good as your Virus Definition files. NAV can be autoconfigured to download these upgrades for you.

Ultimate (or pipeline, in some folks terminology) security would be served by accepting Al Macintyre’s answer, and porting your server over to an AS400 Server. Your ‘stuff’ is safe, but can your users do what they need/want to do, ina client they are familiar with? Questions … questions? (!)

      Enjoy 🙂

Like you, we run NA software, and found their update features lacking. We use a 2 pronged approach for this,
      On any Win9x box,
      1) have login script copy the dat files from a location on the network to a temp directory on their machine, then
2)once they reboot, their autoexec.bat copies the dats to their mcafee directory before loading scan.exe.

      on NT machines,
      1) login script disables the 3 services for viruscan,
      2) copies the dat files into the mcafee directory,
      3) restarts the services.

This is the same for the servers and the workstations, however our scripts are different due to Netshield vs ViruscanNT

Here is an example of the Win9x stuff:
      copy k:\util\mcafee\vscan4.upd\*.* c:\update
      Then in the autoexec.bat:
      copy c:\update\*.* c:\progra~1\networ~1\mcafee~1

for our NT Server side, it’s:

      net stop “Network Associates McShield”
net stop “Network Associates Alert Manager”
net stop “Network Associates Task Manager”
      copy k:\util\mcafee\vscan4.upd\*.* “c:\program files\Network Associates\Netshield NT”
      net start “Network Associates McShield”
net start “Network Associates Alert Manager”
net start “Network Associates Task Manager”
      exit

This works well, and the Workstation side is jsut as easy.

Actually, i’m from the school where you utilize more than one AV program. Especially where the .vbs types prey on vanity. More expensive? Yes. More effective? Yes. Use Norton as the primary and you current as the secondary AV. Norton uses a better search engine than the other. Alot more work is involved, but isn’t the goal to be virus free ? Examine the preferences of your AV systems. Set the update sequence to occur when the server is less taxed so that the process will be more efficient. One AV program ?? Not in the the new century. I hope this helps you in your quest.

I just came from a similar environment. We used f-secure anti-virus. They are base out of Finland and have daily updates for the software. They use backweb technology for the updates. They can be found at http://www.f-secure.com

I would say go for F-Secure. It has TWO Scanners (F-Prot and AVP) already built in so you don’t need to think about a second scanner. It is quite easy to set up under NT with their Distribution interface, and YOU control the desktops. That stops users shutting it down and becomming infected as a result. Updates can be sent via BackWeb or downloaded daily, and they are easy to push out to the desktops.

If you want the process to be as automated as possible, then you owe it to yourself to investigate CA’s InoculateIT product. You set up on computer as the AV Master (server of workstation) and it can go get your virus updates on a daily basis and the other workstations poll that computer and update themselves when there are new version. It’s really nice in an entirely NT environment. If you have 9x PC’s as well, you can use their AVUPDATE routine in your login script to keep those clients updated as well.

      Check it out.

I would have to agree with a couple of the other folks in here. We are using Trend Micro’s OfficeScan Suite (desktop/server/e-mail protection) and we are pretty happy with it. It has been solid on the desktop and the server side is going pretty well too. Their support has been outstanding with any issues we have had and the software installs easily.
