Best approach of Project managment

A typical project will go through these steps:
1. Initiation
2. Planning
3. Execution
4. Closing

You start by initiating the project. Find out who the stakeholders are and what their expectations are. Get agreement from them on the objective of the project, and ensure that you have the funding and the team to proceed further.

Once a project has been successfully initiated, you will have to plan it. Depending on the nature of the project, you may have several plan-execute cyles, but you should only ever plan the next cycle. The plan must describe what you're going to do, how you're going to do it (i.e. methodology), how long it will take, what it will cost, who will do the work, what the risks are, and any assumptions thatyou've made. The stakeholders must sign off on the plan and formally commit the resources to your project.

The execution stage is where you run your plan. Here you will coordinate the tasks, monitor progress, address issues and risks, change the scope of the project, and so on. Of course, this is where you meet the project objective.

The closing stage is where you perform any administrative dutes required to wrap up the work. This might include performance feedback for team members, final variance reports, transition to the support groups, etc.

There are as many methodologies to project management as there are fish in the sea - at least it seems that way.
Contact the Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org) for in depth standards and approaches.

Bear in mind it depends on what the project is, what business you are in, and what standards the project may have to conform to, as to what particular approach you will use.
