Best form of satellite comms

By d-addy4488 ·

I am looking for new and different types of comms my company can use abroad, particularly on ships, so I'm assuming it has to be some form of satellite comms because GPRS will not work in the mid-Atlantic for example.

It has to be something I can attach to a laptop and get comms for things such as email and other business related tasks.

I have used BGAN devices, but these rely on line of sight and manual alignment.
Due to the need to be portable (users have to take a laptop and comms up to top deck of ships in order to get signal), I need something small, hopefully not as costly as BGAN (currently paying $4.84/MB) and maybe something a little more modern.

I was kind of hoping there was a USB/Ethernet connected type device I would just plug in, it gets a clear line of site and just hunts down a satellite.
I know larger comms of this type exist, but they are not portable enough for my requirements.

Can anybody offer any advice.
I've looked around but can't find better than BGAN right now

Thank you in advance
