Best tried/review of video cards for CAD

By rohan_in_london ·
Hi - I'm looking to upgrade my AGP video card for some work I am doing on Autocad (2000). At present I have a Hercules Prophet Ultra II (64 mb) but many of the drawings are taking minutes to appear. Obviously I am looking for 128 or 256mb but does anyone know of a good one they have used for CAD work? Or if anyone knows of an independent review of Graphic cards that would be helpful too.
- Many thanks

I work for a school where we are using the ATI 128 pro and radion 7500 succesfully for Autocad and 3d studio max.

If you are looking for reviews look at the gamer sites the cards that work well for games are the cards that will work well for CAD. I think that the top of the line right now is one of the ATI radion 9800 cards at about $480.

Here is what Autodesk says to look for in a card though they will not recomend a particular card.

the NVidia Quadro card. It's especially designed for CAD/CAM and CG creation. Toms Hardware Deviant PC, Overclocker Cafe, Overclockersclub [the name is misleading in that they are hardware guys]hot hardware, 3dchipset, bjorn3d.com,nvnews.netanandtech,digit-life.com all have reviews and info. just do a web search for nvidia quadro reviews.

Right now, single, the ATI 9800, and the Matrox Parhelia for multiple monitors.
Getting truly independent reviews is very difficult, because of the pressure from advertisers.

A general answer:
- ATI is the fastest.
- Matrox displays sharper. -> good for eyes

If you do not do too much 3D rendering with texture, Matrox is the best solution.

You problem isn't related to your display card speed but the calculations time needed by the CPU to compute the drawing.
