Best way to copy a master operating system form one Ibook to another.

We have many IBOOKS and we usually update them during the year. We have been firewiring them to update from a master. Is their a better way? Is it smart to copy from one to another or should the machine that is to be updated be reformated? We run mixed platform of PC’s and Mac’s on a 2003 windows server.
