Best way to learn linux?

By pikikoko ·
I would like to learn Linux? What are some good books for newbies and where can I get the OS.
I have a phone line to the internet so I don't want to download the OS. I need some advice on what to purchase at the local Fry's computer store. Good books are critical or even some videos if possible if they are around.
How to learn this thing is important to me I don't want to spin my wheels if I can help it.
Advice, advice advice, how do I do it.
Thanks

There's a good book called Master RedHat Linux Visually that comes with the OS on CD. It has step by step instructions with screen shots and covers both Command Line and GUI proceedures. I had a Linux server up and running in no time...
It's even pretty reasonably priced $24.95 on Amazon. The only snag is its version 6.2

Another book that is very good is The Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible. This one is somewhat more technical in its approach, but will offer more "longevity"...and of course it comeswith a newer version of the OS.

The Dummies book is only fair...very rudimentary and it was a bit of a disappointment to me.

I do like my O'Reilly Linux book, but it took me getting comfortable with the Visually book before I really got much out of it.

Hope this helps!

There are plenty of websites on Linux and its tutorials. As for the books, Red Hat Bible OR Linux Unleashed are one of the best books available. They usually come with the OS on the CD-ROMs. You should be able to find them easily.

For your information, the lastest version of Red Hat Linux is 7.3, Mandrake is 8.1. And there are other flavours of Linux like SuSE, FreeBDS, Debian etc. Personally I prefer Redhat.
