Big problem on laptop

By mzy ·
Everyone, I've met 2 problems:
1) Sometimes, when I startup my laptop, the whole booting occurs properly and no error is shown, but when I login, only a few icons(My Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin, Network Neighbourhood & Internet Explorer) appear. The rest of my shortcuts are not shown, until I refresh the page. Any ideas? I hate that...

2) Whenever I click on a link in internet explorer, it will show the page "Web Page Unavailable". I will have to click back, and then click on the link again before it goes to that page. Is that a configuration error?

My OS is Win98SE, my laptop is a Compaq Presario 1200, and these problems started only after I used the recovery disk after a year of usage. Any other details needed, pls ask me.

I thank you for your suggestions beforehand.

The problems may be from the recovery disk. If I understand correctly the recovery disk is about a year old. It might of changed a few things on your computer, like the video drivers. Check and see if you have the latest video drivers for your computer and try installing Internet Explorer again. This
may help you out.

Good Luck

I tried it, but the problem still continued. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

As I understand when you run a recovery disk, basically you are reinstalling the original os with the default configurations. Any customizations, software and os updates, etc., will be lost (besides not being able to run some or all of your installed applications). In my experience as a tech for HP, running recovery cd's is not worth the effort, it is better to troubleshoot the problem completely or do a clean install. I know this won't resolve the issue but I could not resist giving you this info.

Hi

My advice is simple, try using the recovery CD again. Assuming it is CD bootable, set laptop to boot from CD. If problem still persist go to the shop which you purchase the Laptop, tell they what happen and ask for another recovery CD. It is not worth the time loading windows and other software yourself
