COM+ Event System service hanging, network connections icons missing. (But the network is still connected and communicating)
From the event log: Event ID 7022: “The COM+ Event System service hung on starting.”
Setup: A domain with 6 PCs – 1 WS2K3SP1 DC, 1 WS2K3 Web Edition member server, 4 XPSP2 clients. All are P4 processors. I use baseline Ghost images to restore the PCs for testing purposes, and the images have worked fine for many months.
Here’s the issue:
The domain will run fine for months. Then, sudddenly, I notice that the network icons are missing from a couple of the PCs. It could be any PC or PCs… sometimes the IIS (WS2K3 Web Ed.) box and an XPSP2 client, sometimes 2 XPSP2 clients, sometimes three.
Last time it happened, after spending 3 days searching MS and the web in general for any possible solutions, and having nothing work, I couldn’t figure out the problem, so I re-comissioned the whole domain. I left all of the settings at default values to see if that would help. It didn’t.
I’d like to find out why this may be happening. Here are a few of the things I’ve tried so far:
Scanned whole domain for viruses (defs are updated daily, and scans are done daily, so a virus is very unlikely)
Tried removing/adding COM+, which failed with an “internal error” response.
Re-installed the OS on the Problem PCs (which only helped for a short time; therefore the problem is domain wide and/or OS-specific).
Re-installed images (same result as previous try).
Greatly reduced COM security.
Increased COM-related permissions.
Blocked inheritance from parent domain (forest root).
Re-registered .DLL’s (netman, netcfgx, netshell, etc).
Removed and re-added NICs, and TCP/IP.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
