bin extension, application/octet-stream

I received an email with an attachment that has bin extension, which is an application/octet-stream. When i attempt to open the file, it opens in MS Word in a series of small boxes which are symbols. It is unreadable. How can I open it crrectly?Hope u can help me.

there is usually a program to open the file. If you have it, open it from that application, or if it is your 'list of things that can be run from your computer', click on it, then while holding shift, right click on it and select open with.

Binary files can oly be opened by the application that created it (that is what my programming teacher told me...)
