Bing – as a search engine – How good is it?

    Locked

    by deadly ernest ·

I just did a comparison between Bing and Google on the same search parameters:

    “Ernest Bywater”
Bing 122 hits and all but five from the USA
Google 1,820 with hits from all over the world.

    “Ernest E Bywater”
Both showed only hits from my web site
    Bing 1
    Google 7

“Cazna Rochester” (an erotic author I know)
    Bing 10
    Google 294

OK, these aren’t common everyday searches, but you’d expect some sort of parity between them – not this wide a discrepancy between the two engines.

What do others think of Bing as a search engine?

I’m not that impressed with it

It has some bells and whistles like little notes open up when you move your mouse over a link but so what. It still just gives you sites that are simply selling crap. Google gives you sites that can give you information. Not simply sell crap.

Although my gut feelings match your measured results. Ironically, I find it particularly lacking when I’m searching for Microsoft-specific information…

          That’s not ironic, that’s unnecessary.

“I binged ‘irony’.” Nope, doesn’t have the same ring to it.

I was looking for some info on Vista Mail today and it’s no were near as good as just using the M$ Knowledge Base Search Engine.

It currently leaves a lot to be desired.

the MS Knowledge Base search engine sucks like a black hole, Bing should be a resounding failure. 😀 😀 😀

Quick, someone try out this theory, it really could be the same search engine.

If you search porn I bet you’ll get “Windows 95 Installation Guide” lol.

I think that Bing is supposed to give you ‘more than just a search engine’ but i find no need for something that does more than you want it to.
If you want to do something, pick what it is and do it well, don’t try and add 125 million other things and compromise your ability to do the main job.
It’s like a baker trying to do painting, building and astro-physics. Their bread will taste terrible!

I must admit that Google seems to have the best results, though I keep a collection of other engines in reserve. Bing? Pfft.

less matches to distract you from what you thought that you were looking for in the first place.

I didn’t get that. I didn’t get any Sponsored Sites.

That freaking opening graphic nonsense they can keep…

on what you type in as to wheter you get the sponsored adds. When I typed in bundaberg I got the sponsored adds. I didn’t get an opening graphic.

          Agreed on the opening graphics

          by charliespencer ·

I recall trying an advanced search. In my FF 3, the graphics blocked some of the search options boxes. Maybe it was the resolution I was running, maybe it was my browser, but I recall being able to reproduce the problem regularly. I think that’s when I quit trying it.

For me, Bing is on the -10 on a scale of relevancy and usability.

MS’s key authentication schema for Windows 7, I understand why it performs so poorly :^0

Never looked at Bing. Won’t. Just gonna use Google same as before.
