Get yourself a startup disk and use that to boot.

If the computer will boot from the floppy and work then you have a problem with your hard drive.

It would be the boot record that could be damaged so depending on your operating system you willhave to follow the proper procedure to get the boot sector back.

Now this could have been caused by a computer virus. If you have the "Emergency AntiVirus Boot disks" or the Antivirus program you have has a bootable CD, you can try and boot from them to scan the disk and remove any virus it may find.

I have seen a damaged boot sector on the hard drive do this. It actually starts to boot from the hard drive but the instructions it reads from the boot sector just do not work.

So, the PC shuts down just before it would 'normally' display the list of devices and drives that the BIOS found?

I would start by assuming that a plug-in card or drive has a critical hardware error.

Disconnect all drives, and then remove cards one at a time.

Start with the modem and network cards.

Double check that the CPU fan is running.
For 'modern' CPUs, the heat rises so fast that the CPU can reach over-temp before the BIOS completes the POST test.

After the CPU fan, and plug-in cards, you are left with RAM, CPU and motherboard.

It would not hurt to reset the CMOS memory, and check the CMOS battery.
