Locked

BIOS PASSWORD

By malik_solo ·
I have a Compaq Presario 2500 series Laptop and had entered a password which i have forgotten. Now i cannot check my bios for boot options etc. Please could someone advise me on how to unlock this password or reset it. Another point is if i remove the CMOS battery will it work and will it wipe out anything on my hardisk (partitioned into 2) or not.

CMOS battery won't help

by OldER Mycroft In reply to BIOS PASSWORD

It will only re-set the BIOS to factory defaults. So if you've adapted the settings in any way - you'll lose those settings.

The password is most likely stored on an EEPROM which does not rely on electrical power to retain its data.

I'd sit down and have a long hard think!

BIOS PASSWORD RESETTING

by satyasandu In reply to BIOS PASSWORD

well thare are several ways of resetting BIOS password depending upon th h\w configuration one have, but the most common way to do this is to lift you CMOS battery fro about 30-60 secs, which will resett ala CMOS settings, & after when you reinsert it, CMOS should automatically detect one's h\w configuration. which should not be a preoblem at all..

Have you looked inside a laptop since 2002 ?????

by OldER Mycroft In reply to BIOS PASSWORD RESETTING

For that matter, when was the last time you actually 'removed' a CMOS battery from a laptop, let alone actually managed to find it ?????

More recent notebooks

by The Scummy One In reply to BIOS PASSWORD RESETTING

have the PW stored on the HDD or EEPROM chip. This means that you cannot just remove the battery to gain access.

If it is on the HDD, the manufacturer will need to be contacted. If it is tried to be removed, it will likely wipe the entire drive.

This is simply false information.

I have 15 year old low level utilities that can read and sector and byte edit any thing on your drive.

I hope all honest people out there good suscess and am sorry that the hackers will find the desired results somewhere and the lamers will find they spend more time being dishonest and stupid than they would working an honest job and buying what they wanted.

And the dummies here will remain dumb.

Actually, if a drivelock is enabled

by w2ktechman In reply to while I do not care to pr ...

the HDD will self destruct and no data will be available if it is not recovered correctly. For many HDD's, this can be overcome. But I was in a chat with a data recovery guy last week, about a BIOS PW problem on a drive that needed data to go to Litigation.
He had informed me that it is about 60% failure and 40% success, depending on the drive manufacturer. He also informed me that these newer drives, if they have a drivelock on it, and it is tampered with at all, will go into a hyper-active mode which scratches the heads across all platters in just a few seconds making all of the data unrecoverable and the HDD trashed. Sending the platters out to a recovery service would be useless.

so, unless you think that you know everything, you should not insult others and their professions. Several people, very well knowledgeable) here have stated things, and you keep arguing the point and trying to belittle us.

In another thread, I said I will give you another chance. And since this was posted before my offer, I will not retaliate at this point.

But, do not discount what everyone is saying here just because you read somewhere that it could be done.
