Bios password

By maguzman ·
Hey I forgot my bios password for my Dell latitude X200 laptop, so I cant get into the internal hard drive. And to make matters worse, I also lost my docking station. I opened it up and removed what looks like the CMOS battery, then I left it for 3days. My results were that them system still refuses give me access. what else can I do, since I can even access my work. Thanks

well I don't want kick you when your down but, ah, your probably going to have to contact Dell. Once the admin password is set for the BIOS and you forget it about the only thing to do is send it in to them. you MIGHT be able to do an BIOS upgrade and flash it which MIGHT reset the BIOS to factory defaults. Key word is MIGHT! .

Well, DR has it right.
For most laptops, the BIOS password is NOT user resettable.

This is a security feature to make stolen laptops less valuable.

There is a way to retrieve your files though.

You need a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE drive adapter kit.

Remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it as a secondary or slave drive on a desktop system.
Boot up and copy the files you need.

Re-assemble the laptop, and take or send it to a Dell service facility along with proof of ownership.

You can actually clear the password by clearing the NVRAM. Go to Dell's site and search on how to clear the NVRAM. Also, you can remove the CMOS battery, turn the computer on then off to reset all values in the BIOS.

The backdoor password promises the most help, as long as you can determine the maker of the BIOS. A search on the Internet for BIOS passwords can turn up a number of sites listing potential backdoor passwords. One popular site is Win?s BIOS.

Sorry to all that want to reset anything. The password is set in a security chip separate from the bios.

You can contact Dell but be prepared to provide proof of purchase.
