Updating your BIOS provides for better software to control your hardware basically. (updates drivers)

There could have been some issues surrounding compatibility with various hardware with the previous BIOS, so the vendor will provide an update for it.

I don't really understand your second question. I'm assuming you're saying that you don't know how to improve disk performance. In what way do you mean? Is there a problem with your hard drive.

But be very careful when you flash, print out the instructions and follow them religiously, one incorrect move and the system may be done for. I screwed up a $300 CD-RW trying to flash it...

You flash BIOS to get rid of old settings including sometimes passwords. Mostly it is to reset the settings and then set them to default and adjust the ones you want after that. These BIOS programs sometimes have bugs and motherboard manufacturers have updates for the BIOS on their web sites. Updating normally requires a boot with a DOS disk with no memory resident programs except pure DOS. Then you flash the old BIOS with the new one - hopefully fixing all those bugs.

After flashing the BIOS it will ask you to reboot. Then go into BIOS setup again select the defaults settings first and then make adjustments for your hardware as necessary.

I tried using Windows 98 boot disk and in my case it didn't do the job. It may work with 98 or NT on your motherboard, however have DOS boot disk so if doesn't you can still do it.

Stop disk performance type:
diskperf -n on the command prompt,

Kamal

Updating the BIOS will add, fix or improve the function and or features of your motherboard. I have a ASUA P3B-F and updated at least twice with no problem.
Read the instruction and follow excactly.
DO NOT USE A DOS WINDOW OR COMMAND PROMPT !
Created a DOS or WIN95 bootable disk and copy your flash utility and BIOS upgrade to it. Run from the floppy.

BIOS UPDATE &FLASH.EXE

Make sure before you begin, if your motherboard is plug and play or not. If you have Plug and Play then download the aflsh.exe program from ASUS. If you do not have plug and play then the FLASH.EXE should work. All BIOS update should be and MUST be done through DOS. Make a boot disk with all system files. Make another disk with the AFLASH.EXE or FLASH.EXE files and the BIOS update file, which should be ab5i1010.awd. After booting from that boot disk, insert the disk that has the Flash program and then run this. It will give you a choice to backup OLD BIOS. Backup the OLD bios. Then Update the new BIOS. When it ask for the file name, type ab5i1010.awd. This is it. You can always go back to the old bios if you need to.
