Black screen after improper video driver install

I stupidly forgot to restart after uninstalling nvidia drivers for my Quadro FX 500 card and then installed older drivers. Upon restart, the screen goes black after xp (professional) splash screen and stays black. I cant start in any safe mode; the system hangs and the last driver displayed is agp440.sys. I can boot from symantec recovery disk but have not figured out what to do get the OS to boot with video.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
