Black screen / booting from CD problem.

By kimpaw ·
Hi, i have a big problem with my pc, its an dell dimension 5150.

when i start the pc, following comes up: "drive 1 not found: serial ATA, SATA-2 o Drive 3 not found: parallel ATA, PATA-1 (PRI IDE Slave)
Intel (R) Matrix Storage Manager option ROM v5.0.2.1005 ICH7R.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility"

(and some other random non importent text)

When i press F1, it comes the "press any key to boot from cd" so i do that, but nothing happens, only a black screen, been waiting for ages cus i can hear that the pc is working but doesnt matter how long i wait, nothing happens.

i?ve tryed doing the same thing but with windows 98 cd, with that i get into the blue screen with "format unit (recommended)" or "cancel". it says on top of that "cant install windows-files on harddrive since unit C has a format that isnt compatible with windows 98 etc.

any tip how i can fix this? (sorry if my english aint great). thnx.

Whenever you get someone responding.

But you answer here is that the HDD in this system has died/Stopped Working or become disconnected.

When you Press any Key to Boot From CD it requires a Install Disc in the Optical Drive to do anything from there. If there is no Disc in the Optical Drive you will get a black screen with a Blinking White Cursor on the top left hand side of the screen.

Here you need to find out why the HDD is not being correctly identified so ideally you should use the HDD Makers Testing Utility to test the Drive you can get that here

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

But you will need to know who Dell bought the HDD from in the first place.

Also if it fails the test you'll need to remove the HDD fit to another computer and test again. If it pases the second test the M'Board or Connector between the M'Board and HDD is faulty.

Of course if it fails the second test as well as the first the drive is Dead and needs replacing.
