I have seen so many posts all over the internet regarding black screens before or after the login screen for Vista. The problem is, they all appear to be different.
In my case, the login screen will eventually appear, but not after a few minutes like some people. No, it actually takes 30 minutes or more. What’s worse, is that it is happening on a few machines, all of them the same model.
HP dx2300 Microtower, with an NVIDIA 8500GT graphics card.
This didn’t happen to begin with, but it wasn’t long before it was happening on all the machines. I tried restoring to an earlier point, and it didn’t fix the issue.
I had to disable the Nvidia service from running as that stops their roaming profiles from loading, but I’m pretty sure I’ve tested it after re-enabling the service, and still no change.
I have run sfc, nothing, startup repair, nothing. I can only assume that something is timing out just before the login screen appears, but what could it be? Nothing appears in the error logs.
If this carries on for much longer, I will be reverting all the machines back to XP.
