Black screen & power button inactive

By cgangel ·
Client's Dell computer is experiencing black screen and lock up; power button will not shut it down. Must unplug to power down. Symptom occurs randomly, not associated with any one activity. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can check hardware; the power button and switch, try resetting the bios to see if it is having a problem, you can check power savings settings in the os and bios. You can switch the hard drive to another pc to see if it os related or hardware related. Good Luck!

I take it you have tried holding the power button in for 8 seconds or more??? I am asuming its an ATX based P/S and M/B, simply clicking the power button in and out on this type of system wil not shut it down. If you have already tried this then start checking the hardware. As far as the black screen goes you would have to supply more info.

one other thing you may consider. Is this a power saving mode issue? Is your client using win98 and an open gl screen saver? Windows 98 has several issues with sleep mode not able to recover especially when using open gl screen savers.

Thanks for the quick replies! The
client's son had set up the "scrolling
marque" screen saver for him and
thats when the problem first started.
