Blackberry as wireless data connection

By Spankylogic9000 ·
Does anyone have any experience using a black berry via USB cable as a wireless modem for a laptop?

If so about what speed were you able to obtain and did it compare to the PCMIA wireless cards

I'm in line to get my users some sort of wireless solution for remote access through citrix, and most of them already carry a cell phone. I've heard of using the blackberry as a data connection just don't have any experience using it or any knowledge of expectations beyond what the sales guys has told me.

Any feed back would be great!! Thanks!!

A couple of users are trialling this type of connectivity as opposed to PCMCIA data cards. Using the BB they are averaging speeds of 115Kbps as opposed to a maximum on the 384Kbps data card.
Battery life could be an issue, although it is charging will connected to the notebook, 3G devices are notorious for having a short battery life.
One other point that hasn't been tested and confirmed is receiving calls while the BB is acting as a modem. From what I've been told incoming calls divert to voicemail.
Setting up is simple enough, but best to contact your carrier for step-by-step instruction incase they have any peculiarities.
