And so it begins...

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

So Delenn said, and a new chapter of the Babylon station began.

The gatos here are being obnoxious. Typing around a cat on the lap is a skill I'm perfecting. Ivanova kitty has decided that my lap is the best place to be right now. Three cats that get along imperfectly are always entertaining. One of the cats acts more like a dog than a cat, so the houseguests are usually bemused or enchanted. Marcus kitty is probably part Maine Coon, so he really is a big ol' ginger furball. Delenn is a lovely gray lady. She probably never had to deal with kittens, so when we brought in the other 2 as kittens, she didn't know how to manage them. Now they run her around.

Oh well. Kitty hugs, what more can you ask for?

So much to do, So little time

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

I'm a new employee at a local community college in their technology department. They are implementing Banner systems across the board, going live with Finance in October, HR in January, Financial Aid early next year, and Student by next July. And the usual maintenance needs to be taking place on the existing systems, as usual. So there is training going on multiple days each week, 7 hours each day. It's actually pretty good, I've been able to get close to up to speed with this on the new system. Unfortunately, getting up to speed on the legacy system is taking a fair amount of time and those lovely legacy tasks don't go away, even though one can wish they would.<br><br>I'm also in the middle of a small business startup. Just not the usual startup that most folks here at TR do. I face paint, and am starting up that business in my after hours and weekends. No, I am actually nuts, I know that. Learning the business end of this is interesting, but I didn't think i was the entrepreneur type. There is always something else that needs to be done for the business, not to mention keeping up with the painting side. I am finding out that I can do this as long as I create lots of lists and I work on one thing at a time until it's done. Perserverance will do more for me with the business than anything else. In the meantime, I can wish for Hermione's little hourglass to turn back time. Being in 2 places at one time would be a nice trick to be able to pull off.

It ain't the heat, it's the humidity

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

Well, I've survived the morning painting. It was a lovely gray morning
getting to the site at 8am. Light mist and fully overcast skies. By
10am the mist and the clouds had burned off, and the temperature had
increased by 10 degrees F. The event was a Rubber Ducky race along a
creek. So the humidity was 70% and the temperature was 80 deg F. It was
very, very warm, and what was on my face was melting off. But that's a
part of the this type of business. Ice water is a good thing.

Here's a <a href="http://holycross-eyc.org/v-web/gallery/dderby">link </a>to a bit of my face painting.  Hopefully you'll enjoy it.  <br />

Cough cough hack hack

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

Ugh. I've been coughing and sick for 2 weeks.  <br />
<br />
Two weeks ago I was running a fever of over 101 degrees F.  Called
the doctor and he prescribed me lots o' good drugs... Antibiotics,
decongestants, and cough syrup.  I got to feeling much better, but
I've had a persistent cough that just wouldn't go away.  I know my
co-workers aren't really thrilled to hear me hacking up a lung
occasionally during the day.  Not to mention that it really isn't
very pleasant for me either.  <br />
<br />
This morning I got up to get ready for work.  Bad move,
moving.  I was extremely dizzy.  Not the "oh, I just got up
and my needs a couple of seconds to adjust."  It was the "Oh my
god, I have to sit down before I fall over" dizziness.  It didn't
just go away.  So I stayed home and called the doctor's office
back.  It toook 2 phone calls, and most of the day, but I got
worked in to see the doctor.  I had the joy of a breathing
treatment, and have the option of going back to get a shot and another
breathing treatment tomorow.  Not to mention going elsewhere for a
chest xray, a nice bag of drug samples, and more prescriptions.  <br />
<br />
I'm so ready to be well. <br />

Holidays! Happy 4th of July

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

Happy Fourth of July!  <br />
<br />
There has been a great deal written about the debt owed by our country
to our armed services.  All I can add is ditto.  I support
the men and women who put their lives on the line every single day to
preserve our way of life.  The only thing I have to add is that we
all have the responsibility to make sure we act responsibly in our
choices of elected officials to make sure that our constitution and its
protections remain and are applied to everyone.<br />
<br />
We finally took the time to go see the last Star Wars movie today at
the first matinee.  There are advantages to being the only people
in the theater.  When there are amazing physics flubs or stupid
lines, laughing out loud isn't going to bother other film goers.
Overall it wasn't too bad.  I just wanted to sit and smack Anakin
upside the head, though.  He's living in the middle of the Jedi,
and married to a Senator, for goodness sake.  His mentor is a
member of the Jedi Council.  He ought to be a whole lot more
cognizant of the political maneuvering that takes place at the highest
levels of power.  And the platitudes that Palpatine was spouting
about folks not wanting to lose power should have been a big tipoff to
his good buddy that he should have taken a closer look at the
chancellor.  But without the turn to the dark side, you couldn't
have had the original trilogy.  I just wish it could have been
done a bit more smoothly and less transparently.  I was impressed
with Ewan McGregor, though.  He did a good job evoking Sir Alec
Guiness with his performance.  I'd like to see Hayden Christensen
in something with a real script and not an excuse for SFX.<br />
<br />
Now it's getting close to time to grill burgers and see about fireworks.  Have a safe and happy fourth!<br />

Dennis go away!

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

Well, if wishful thinking could do the trick, Hurricane Dennis would
be a summer breeze that is dissipating.  Instead it's a strong <a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshs.shtml">Cat
3</a> storm that will intensify to be <a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshs.shtml">Cat 4</a><a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshs.shtml"> or 5</a> by the time it makes
landfall.  It appears that it will take a similar track to the one
<a href="http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/at200409.asp">Ivan</a>
did last September.  We lost power for 5 days last year from
Ivan.  And we're 350 miles inland from coast!  We'll see what
happens on Monday.  The mad weather run on stores hasn't
completely happened yet.  That's tomorrow.  Then the grocery
stores will be denuded of beer, bread, milk, peanut butter, and toilet
paper.  <br />
<br />
My sister's family lives between <a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/FL/Panama_City.html">Panama City</a> and <a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/FL/Panama_City/KDTS.html">Destin</a>
FL.  They've evacuated eastward to the main FL Peninsula.  I
don't envy her moving 2 small children hours away in a very stressfull
environment.  With the hurricane forecast to make landfall between
<a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/FL/Pensacola.html">Pensacola, FL</a> and <a href="http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=Mobile%2C+AL">Mobile, AL</a>
right now, the main force of the hurricane winds and storm surge will
be to the immediate east of the eye.  That doesn't bode really
well for the safety of their home, but at least they are not close to
the landfall.  Last year there were a number of tornados that hit
Panama City when Ivan came ashore.  I'm really glad they have
cleared out.  <br />
<br /><a href="http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/">Weather Underground</a> has good information on the hurricane.  The <a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/">NOAA</a> has more information on it as well.  <br />

The rain rain rain came down down down

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

Well, <a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCUAT4+shtml/101940.shtml">Hurricane Dennis</a>
made landfall approx. 5.5 hours ago. The coastal areas are
clearing up, but we are getting ready to get the worst of it now.
At least it is a <a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshs.shtml">Cat 1</a>
storm as of 6:00 PM CDT. The winds are starting to pickup here
and we are expecting them to get worse throughout the evening and
night. As we get gusts and see the trees around the house bend
and twist it is impressive. We've already heard one transformer
**** out/up earlier. I'm just hoping that most of the trees that
would go went already last year with Ivan. We're under a <a href="http://www.srh.noaa.gov/bmx/">flood warning</a> for good reason. <a href="http://www.srh.noaa.gov/radar/latest/DS.80stp/si.kbmx.shtml">The rain</a><a href="http://www.srh.noaa.gov/radar/latest/DS.80stp/si.kbmx.shtml"> totals</a>
are going to continue to accumulate. Hopefully with nightfall the
convection activity won't be quite as active, and some of the
thunderstorms and tornados won't happen. It's probably wishful
thinking, but what else is there for me to do? <br />
<br />
A <a href="http://www.cowboymouth.com/aynil.php">hurricane party</a>,
yeah, that's the ticket! We've got the <a href="http://www.tootsie.com/">tootsie rolls</a>, the <a href="http://www.alabrew.com/">beer</a>,
and the <a href="http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/drinks/k-cider/topsites/">cider</a>, we're set. We've also got the knee braces and the
crutches. That's a more likely scenario, unfortunately. But
<a href="http://margaritaville.com/discography/a1a.htm#TRYING%20TO%20REASON%20WITH%20THE%20HURRICANE%20SEASON">tryin to reason with hurricane season </a>is useless. Wish everyone luck that things aren't going to get horrible. <br />

Whew, first one down.

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

Well, it was not as crazy as first thought. Dennis did damage in
the area, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Knock wood,
we didn't lose power through the night and we kept our internet
connection. I do believe that Ivan shook loose most of the things
that would go flying. Now we are stocked up on <a href="http://www.chefboyardee.com/pages/home_flash.html">chef boyardee spaghetti</a> cans and <a href="http://www.members.kconline.com/kerr/pb.htm">peanut butter</a>,
so for the next several storms we won't have to make sure the cabinet
is stocked with no heat food items. Cases of bottled water will
be used, so it isn't a problem. We got the dry ice in case we
lost power, so of course this time we didn't. Now, let me google
101 uses for dry ice...<br />

Smoked Pork BBQ

by 'Laine In reply to Blah blah blah blog

My hubby is currently 2.5 hours into a 5 hour smoking session.  He
is smoking 3 pork butts for our lunches, and our respective places of
employments' lunches.  He's got a nice sized<a href="http://www.nbsmoker.com/smokers.html"> grill/smoker</a>
that was a christmas present several years ago.  It's big enough
that firing it up for one item is a  bit of a waste.  He'll
smoke 5 or 6 slabs of ribs at a time, or several chickens, or a
turkey.  He's already got the bbq sauces ready.  He's got
several pre-made ones, and a white North Alabama sauce made.
Think <a href="http://www.bigbobgibsonbbq.com/main.htm">Big Bob Gibson's</a>.  These guys were featured on a <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_pa/0,1976,FOOD_10234,00.html">Paula Dean</a>'s BBQ special on <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/">Food Network</a>.  <br />
<br />
The joys of good food.  Yum!<br />
