Blank Screen on Boot

By R.Williams ·
I have a server that gives me a blank screen with a flashing cursor on the top left hand corner.
The server will boot OK from an NT boot floppy I created, but fails when it is removed.
I have tried FDISK /MBR with no success and was wondering if anyone had any ideas...

First thing is to boot and run all three setup disks and use RDisk to repair the boot sector.
If your three setup disks do not work, use
the NT Server CD and boot from CD and run setup and replace the NTLDR, NTDetect and Boot.ini.
that should work.

Thanks for that, how would one go about replacing those files through setup?

If you can boot from the boot floppy but not from the hard disk, one of the boot files on the floppy is probably missing from the hard disk. Find out which, and put it back.

You should see the following files in the root directory of your hard disk:
io.sys
msdos.sys
ntdetect.com
ntldr
boot.ini

All of these should be Read only, with the System flag set. The first four also typically have the Hidden flag set.

Good luck.

I believe your boot.ini on your hardrive is corrupted. Open it on text editor and check where it tells the system file is or you could just replace it from the boot floppy.

Good luck
