blew my mobo or memory?

By jjwex ·
I WAS PUTING IN A NEW PCI EXPRESS CARD INTO MY PALVILION A814X AND COULD NOT GET THE CARD TO WORK. I REINSTALLED THE OLD MEMORY AND NOW WHEN THE SYSTEM TRIES TO BOOT, IT GOES THROUGH THE BOOT STEPS BUT THEN RIGHT TO A BLANK SCREEN. ANY IDEAS?

going thru the boot steps...meaning the HP logo, BIOS memory counting, etc?

or the boot steps of 'Windows loading'.....

The first guess would be that you knocked a cable loose, like the power or data connector for the hard drive.

If you blew up the ram or motherboard, you would likely end up with either no POST at all, or a bunch of beep codes.

BTW, don't type all in caps.....

If you were installing a PCI Express card why did you remove your RAM? or did you upgrade that too?

Why were you trying to install a new card to begin with? Did the old one not work?

According to the specs on the HP web site, this model did not come with a PCI Express slot. So, I'm curious as to why you would be attempting to install one.

that would complicate the install somewhat

Take away everything except motherboard, CPU, PSU, hard drive, original video card, and one stick of RAM. Any luck?
