Locked

blinking cursor

By denberg1 ·
on my macine at work (AMD 366, 64 mb ram), I run several MSOffice applications as well as a network version of AutoCAD. When i leave my desk for a period of time, the screen goes blank and i get a blinking cursor. At this point the system is locked up, and i have to reboot.

I am assuming this is a power supply problem (although I have not investigated it as of yet). I was wondering if there were any other avenues i should be exploring besides this.....maybe the video card?

Any ideas would be appreciated

Hello,

Personally i think it could be an overheating problem, or maybe even the Harddrive thats on its way out. I had a similar problem last week with a customers computer, when u leave it for a while the HDD is trying to go into power-save mode and thats when it hanged.

Do you run all these apps at the same time? If you are running MSOffice 2000 apps and the autocad program concurrently, it could be you are approaching your limit on system resources. Office2000 is quite a resource hog alone, let alone in conjunction with auto cad. It's possible that when the screensaver kicks in, all your system resources are gobbled up and the system has no choice but to hang. You might want to consider increasing your RAM to 128MB and see if that alleviates the problem.

I guess i didn't get the right system info the first time...this computer is a AMD-K6 w/128 mb ram. This morning it did the same thing had to reboot. Over the weekend i found someone who had the same problem and had the wrong monitor type configured. The problem went away after they got the right monitored driver. Mine is a Hitachi CM715 but i can't find the driver anywhere on their site.

This is a common fault with power management. When a PC is no used for a chosen period of time things like the monitor and hard disk can be turned off. It is most likely that the PC is going into standby mode.

Try the following-

Go to into theControl Panel and double click on Power Management. Make sure system standby and turn off hard disk are set to never. The monitor does not usually cause a problem.

You could also try disabling any screen savers as these could be causing the problem
