Blue Screen of death

Ejdevjr,
Proprietary systems like Compaq are really tricky. If this is an NT system, try for the "last known good" event. Every time NT boots to a good setting it captures that and remembers it for the next time you boot your system. Actually it makes an entry within your registry. This is one of NT's recovery feature. It has always worked for me when I make post modifications to my system. You can also try using the three setup disks that NT comes with. I know you didn't install the OS through an NT disk, but there may be a slight chance that it might work. If it does just select the item to repair your start up settings. Although, this may mess up any added features that compaq has in their CD disk. One more thing before I leave you on your merry way. Compaq or any of those big computer retailers out there usually have a recover disk. But I'm sure you knew that already.
Good luck

The above answer is definitely the way to go. Boot to the last known good menu by pressing space bar when prompted, the choose L for last known good configuration and it should go back to the original config.
