By lhatcher ·
I have a dell optiplex 370, running xp sp1.
When I try to boot with the ps2 keyboard attached i get the following message,"system device detected - system halted" when I boot without keyboard it gets the usual no keyboard error message, but It boots to windows.

Try known good keyboard. If you still get the error then the plug (i.e. system board) has gone bad. If you don't then it was the keyboard.

I suspect Dave's correct and you have a bad PS/2 connector. Try a USB keyboard. Only fix I know of other than replacing mobo.

You may need to configure BIOS for a USB keyboard which can present a Catch 22 situation.

USB keyboard should work in Windows regardless of BIOS setting, but it may be dead during bootup.
