    boot & lz32.dll

    Locked

    by ev3 ·

Every time I boot up I get a system alert ‘lz32.dll is corrupt or missing’… Dismiss the box and almost everything is OK… Except I can’t install or uninstall certain programs, specifically those that use a ‘setup.exe’ type installer. (eg: MS Office products, most virus checkers etc).
I have re-installed lz32 from my original disks, I have done everything the microsoft tech note said to do. No change to the boot up message.
I have not done anything to the registry as yet, there is an entry in ‘\hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\sessionmanager\knowndlls’.
I don’t have time right now to reformat the HD etc and reinstall everything.
Any clues? I do install/uninstall a lot of stuff, and I think the problem occurred atnext boot after some such session.

    thanks, ev3

It sounds like the lz32.dll file has been updated at some point and when you restore from the original disks it is still out of sync with the updates. Try a trawl through technet and see if this file has been included in any system update and then run the update again or extract the file and load it – the 2nd method is probably safest.

      Best of luck

      1.Delete the WINDOWS directory
      2. in the root(C:\) Type attrib -s -h -a -r
and delete all the files direct under the root. ex: IO.sys, autoexec, config….
Then you just install WIN98SE again.90% of your program should still work after you done that.
And put up the ICONs.. (Dont forget to make a backup for your e-mails and addresses and your favorits in the IE4/5.

      Goodluck

Sorry, forgot to say I’m on WIN95. At the moment I cannot chance any problems arising from a reinstall at this point.

the lz32.dll files I found were a year older than the ones on my system. I’m running win95. Will check for newer files, but need to make sure they’re win95 not win98???
