boot option error in c-mos

What motherboard do you have?

I have yet to see a board where you cannot set the floppy drive as a boot option in BIOS settings.

The Windows upgrade should not have changed your BIOS.

1. Does the floppy drive function normally in Windows? If not, the drive or drive controller may be bad.
2. In the standard CMOS settings screen, is the floppy drive listed? And, is it drive "A"?
If the floppy is drive "B", or you have the option set to swap floppy drives, the mother board may not be able to boot from the drive.
3. Is your floppy drive a standard floppy? Or, a Super Disk, or other high capacity drive?
Again, your motherboard may not be able to boot from these IDE device drives.
Or, it may require a special setting to use the drive as a boot drive.
4. Is the floppy drive not listed among the boot sequence options? Or, is it just not selected?
Older BIOS's had you select from a series of predetermined boot device sequences.
New bios's allow you to set the sequence of 2-4 devices in any order you desire.
Many tech's disable the boot from floppy option after the system is running normally to reduce boot time. This is not permanent, and you should be able to set the floppy as the first boot device in the CMOS settings.

Beyond the above, I have no further suggestions.

It's a gateway computer with a tabor systemboard. floppy functions normally when double clicked. boot sequence lists removable drive in place of floppy option. standard floppy that came with system. switched floppys and had no effect.

First check the Device Manager and see if their is an exclamation mark next to floppy or controllers
Boot computer and press key to enter BIOS setup, then go to boot sequence, select and use the pageup or page down key and see if you can get the floppy listed as the boot device

The other option would be to make a bootable floppy and add the flash utility to drive,go to bios manufacturer's web site and review the read me text on how to make a bootable floppy

If you can access the BIOS try to LOAD DEFAULT SETTING. It may work....

During the upgrade was the computer opened ? It appears either;
1. The bios is not seeing a floppy drive connected.
a. The ribbon cable is not seated properly.
b. Answer # 2 the controller is bad.
c. The floppy drive went bad.
d. No power to floppy.
2. The floppy is set to not present/none in the BIOS.

Enabling the floppy in the Bios should give you the option to boot off it.

You did not mention if the light on the floppy comes on or not. Light flashing computer is attempting to access the floppy. No light no power or ribbon cable not connected. Or if the light is on steady, ribbon cable backwards or bad floppy drive.

Light works on floppy and am able to use floppy by double clicking it, it is just not a boot option in cmos. therefore making it impossible to boot from floppy for bios upgrade.

You say your bios lists a removable drive instead of a floppy drive. Aren't they the same?
