Boot Order changed on shutdown

By BCDRGuy ·
What would cause the boot order to change when I shutdown. I have been experiencing this for about a month. 2 HDD, 1 XP-Pro and old 95 OS(laughing yet?) The xp-pro HDD becomes #3 in the order. Could the battery be failing? It's a old 96 Gateway P2.

does it happen when you ctrl+alt+del or just after a cold shutdown?
yes, battery would be my guess also. i usually can see it loading the defaults after a checksum error at the very beginning of boot. well, you knew that..

I would guess that something messed with my Boot sector on my harddrive. Do you use the Win 95 for Internet? I would check both OS with a virus scanner. Try ClamWin: http://www.clamwin.com/

Does the Gateway P2 have the ability to boot to a USB/external storage device ??

The reason I ask, is I have a 128 MB USB Key Drive. If I am at the desktop and I "hot-plug" it, the HD config doesn't change, it grabs the first correct usable Drive Letter. If however I have powered down, and I reboot for some reason by default it tries to become the primary boot device and moves the other HD's one device up.

Then I need to go into the BIOS and change the boot order back to "yes, C: is the primary boot device, followed by CD Drive then Removable Storage"

So have you noticed this after using a USB or Removable Storage Device, or is it a full time thing...??

This is becoming a regular thing. I shutdown the desktop after I change the BIOS settings back to boot from the correct drive. I turn it back on and 95 OS is booting. I am suspecting that the battery is toast.
