Boot Partition Letter Changed

By dguzy ·
Running Win XP on HP Laptop. Inadvertently changed the boot partition drive letter from C to Z. System won't boot.

How can I change the drive letter back to C? I have Partition Magic. There is no floppy drive or Windows XP CD. Only have HP System Recovery CD.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Dave

I believe you can do it off of Partition Magic. If not, did you make the recovery diskette? You could probably change it from the Recovery Console.

I do not have a recovery diskette. Where else can I find the Recovery Console?

I cannot run Partition Magic because the system won't boot.

Have someone with a CD burner create a DOS bootable CD for you.
Include any DOS utilities and file editors that you have.

Boot from the CD, and look in the root of the Hard drive on the PC.
There should be a file named boot.ini
You want to edit this file.
Make a backup copy first.
If the line for booting into XP references drive "Z", change it to drive "C".
If it references "C". change it to "Z".
I'm sure that there are a couple other files that need to be changed to repair this.

Iwill see what I can find.

For details on the boot.ini comamnds, look at the dual boot page at www.systeminternals.com
Or search Microsoft's site for boot.ini, and bootcfg

You will need the Recovery Console. If you cannot get a Windows XP CD then download the Windows XP startup disk for Microsoft. for mre information see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994

Then you can use the diskpartcommand to change the drive letter back for more information on the command see http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300415

Hope this helps
