I am working on a windows 98 machine that is getting a error at bootup. It is not realy an error it just stops booting before windows splash screen and says
C:\windows|wininit.exe

C
ehijklmnopqrstuvwxyz {|} and an assortment of messed up symbles and charactors. Than it will say press any key to continue. If you do it reboots. If you don't it will reboot in so many seconds. Same problem booting into safe mode. Can anyone give me some help?

It seems as though your system is infected with a virus.

You will need a 98 startup disk to boot your computer to a command prompt.

To do so in Windows 98, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then select Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.

At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command):
cd windows
del wininit.exe

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart your computer.
Extract new copies of Wininit.exe files from your Windows CD-ROM.

Start with a clean boot disk to run setup

Ok, to make sure I understand you correctly. I am going to boot with the win98 boot disk and choose command prompt only. Go to windows dir and delete wininit.exe. Reboot and extract wininit.exe from cd. Now am I going to extract wininit file from within windows or am I doing that from a command prompt?

Answer to your comment.

Boot from Win 98 Startup disk (not install disk) created during Win 98 installation or later. Insert Win 98 CD ROM. Run ext program at command prompt (A>ext). This is extraction program. Target path will be C:\WINDOWS. Choose WININIT.EXE to extract and follow prompts.

Hopefully dmiles won't mind me jumping in on this. He was correct in methodology.
