Boot record not found....

By other ·
hey all...this is the scenario... Win98, Fugitsu 8gb, Abit BH6 board, customer kept getting boot record not found. I backed up data, RMA'd drive from fugitsu. Customer used computer for 3 days and got the same message again during a warm boot. Anyone know why ABIT discontinued the BH6 PII ATX motherboard? When she cold boots, no errors are given. Any ideas on what the problem can be? I can be reached at njgrant@grantcomputers.com..

Thanks :)

They probably discontinued it for reasons like the problem you're having now.

I think it is somehow losing the drivers for the hard drive or maybe the primary IDE controller is bad.

Try booting to DOS and at the DOS promt type "FDISK /MBR" without the quotes. Then reboot.

I'm not familiar with that particular motherboard, but most of the newer motherboards have 2 ide connections, Swap the cables from the hard drive to the ide port for the cd rom and vice versa, if problem goes away then you have a bad port.

Since you were able to backup the data from the hard drive after the error it seems to me that there was nothing really physically wrong with the HD.

First try booting to a 98 system disk and do a SYS C: from the dos prompt. (Will replace the OS boot sector and boot files) Attempt a reboot. If it still fails try FDISK /MBR (Will replace the Master Boot Record) and then a SYS C:.

If either above works I would run a updated virus scan on the system. Something is wiping your boot sector.

Many boot sector virii wont be removed even with a FDISK and FORMAT. Examples: Stealth-B and VBA. IMHO - AVP is one of the best scanners out there. www.kasperskylabs.com

I am accepting this answer as it was the closest to the steps I have taken myself. As the problem is intermitant, I am expecting to replace the motherboard within 6 months. I agree that there was probably nothing wrong with the original hard drive, I have contacted ABIT and no one there seems to be at liberty to tell me the reason for the discontiunance other than they have an upgraded version, and will try a rebuild on this board, but will not replace it. Talk to ya soon.
